چکیده

Neutron diffraction has been utilised as a noninvasive diagnostic tool to gain insight into the ancient metallurgic and manufacturing techniques employed for the production of three bronze age axes from archaic to late bronze age (20th to 13th Century BC). The analysed bronze artefacts are from the “Terramare” and other bronze age settlements near Modena, Italy. Neutron diffraction provides the alloy and phase compositions in a totally non destructive approach, without interference from surface alteration and corrosion layers. Furthermore, neutron based texture analysis, with the advantage of large grain statistics deep into the bulk, provides details of the production techniques that can complement traditional metallographic examinations, and may provide unique information for samples that cannot suffer invasive treatments. The Generalized Spherical Radon Transform and Its Application in Texture Analysis

The generalized spherical Radon transform associates the mean values over spherical tori to a function f defined on S ⊂ H, where the elements of S are considered as quaternions representing rotations. It is introduced into the analysis of crystallographic preferred orientation and identified with the probability density function corresponding to the angle distribution function W . Eventually, t...

Dauphiné twinning and texture memory in polycrystalline quartz. Part 3: texture memory during phase transformation

Samples of quartz-bearing rocks were heated above the a (trigonal)–b (hexagonal) phase transformation of quartz (625–950 C) to explore changes in preferred orientation patterns. Textures were measured both in situ and ex situ with neutron, synchrotron X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction. The trigonal–hexagonal phase transformation does not change the orientation of cand a-axes, but posit...

Texture changes in the hcp! bcc! hcp transformation of zirconium studied in situ by neutron diffraction

The crystallographic texture of hot-rolled polycrystalline zirconium has been studied below and above the hcp–bcc transition temperature with HIPPO, the new time-of-flight neutron diffractometer at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, making use of the multidetector capabilities and a vacuum furnace. Incomplete pole figures were extracted from diffraction spectra to determine the orientation dist...

Computational Analysis of Neutron Scattering Data

This work explores potential methods for use in the detection and classification of defects within crystal structures via analysis of diffuse scattering data generated by single crystal neutron scattering experiments. The proposed defect detection methodology uses machine learning and image processing techniques to perform image texture analysis on neutron diffraction patterns generated by neut...
